A little bit of His story
CYC was started in the late 1950’s when about the same time a lot of Christian Camps were set up around New Zealand as different churches reacted to the need that had sprung out of World War Two. Large numbers of kids were growing up without their Fathers, along with increased amounts of families moving to the big cities whose kids were missing out on the experiences that had once been normal for New Zealand Kids.
One of those people who were trying to respond to those needs was a man named Don Bullin who with others under the auspices of BTI (Bible Training Institute now Laidlaw Collage) were touring the country running Christian after school programs. Don saw that a weeklong Camp environment would be an even better way to impact the children’s lives and so he started running week long camps in a Church Hall in Matamata, and then a year later on land used for the Easter Convention near the center of Ngaruawahia.
It was during one of these Camps he met a local farmer Vivian Rankilor who Don asked if there might be a small piece of land that could be purchased to set up a permanent Christian Children’s Camp. Vivian replied that he didn’t know on one but came back later to ask if Don might like to look around a bit of land that he owned. Don his wife and another Gentleman did so and after looking at it asked Vivian if they might be able to purchase a few acres at the front. Vivian said no they couldn’t, but that instead, God had told him he was to give them the entire 90-acre property to be used as an interdenominational Christian Children’s Camp. And so CYC was born!
CYC quickly grew and we now have two Camping sites on the property. Now day’s one site sleeps 250 and the other sleeps 208. Both sites have their own Kitchens. One site is fully catered and the other site is has self-catering facilities for those who would like to provide their own food.
We run our own Holiday programs during school holidays and the rest of the year we hire the site to school groups, family reunions, sports groups, overseas based tour groups and church groups.
A lot of people have gone before us and built a strong foundation for us to continue to build on as we reach out to the young people and their families with the love of God and salvation through Jesus Christ.
So welcome to CYC, come and stay with us to become part of His story at 148 Waingaro Road, Ngaruawahia.
The CYC Board and Staff are committed to promoting the physical, social and spiritual well being of campers, of all ages, through providing excellent facilities and safe activities.
